Preparation
- Dissolve the yeast in warm milk with a little sugar.
- Mix flour, remaining sugar, and optional spices in a large bowl.
- Add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla to the flour mix.
- Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, adding flour as necessary to prevent sticking.
- Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into three pieces and roll each into long strands.
- Braid the strands together into a loaf shape.
- Brush the braid with egg wash and let it rise for another 15 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Do not open the oven during the first 20 minutes of baking.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2-3 days at room temperature or freeze for up to a month. Allow to thaw at room temperature.
