Greek Baklava

Ingredients
  

For the Baklava
  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, almonds, pistachios), chopped Feel free to use just one type of nut.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted Ensure butter is fully melted for even coating.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Adjust if you prefer less sweetness.
  • 1 cup honey

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix chopped nuts with cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the pastry.
  6. Repeat layering phyllo and nuts until you use up your filling, finishing with 8 layers of phyllo on top.
  7. Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes with a sharp knife.
Baking and Finishing
  1. Bake for about 50 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, and honey; bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  4. Pour the syrup over the baklava right after it comes out of the oven.
  5. Allow to cool and soak before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can refrigerate as well, just let it return to room temperature before serving.
