Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft (7-10 minutes). Drain excess fat.
- Stir in garlic powder, salt, and black pepper and mix well.
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Layering
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
- Top with half of the beef mixture and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and cheese.
Baking
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter until the butter is melted.
- Pour the milk mixture evenly over the casserole.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly.
- Let it stand for about 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Consider adding green onions or bacon bits on top just before serving. Pair with a salad or steamed veggies.
