Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground chicken You could use turkey as an alternative.
  • 1 medium bell pepper, diced A green one is recommended for crunch.
  • 1 small onion, diced Chopping might make you cry.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Garlic never hurts!
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce Provides tanginess.
  • 1/4 cup ketchup Essential for Sloppy Joes.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds depth of flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning Do NOT skip this!
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Adds a smoky flavor.
  • to taste salt Sea salt is preferred, regular works too.
  • to taste pepper Use generously.
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns Soft ones recommended.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For sautéing the vegetables.
Optional Toppings
  • sliced pickles For added crunch.
  • shredded cheese My kids love this!
  • coleslaw Popular topping for the kids.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced bell pepper and onion. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Cooking
  1. Add the ground chicken and cook until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Let mixture simmer for 10 minutes.
Assembly
  1. Toast the hamburger buns until golden brown.
  2. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns and add optional toppings.
  3. Cover with the top halves of the buns and serve hot.

Notes

For an extra kick, add chopped jalapeño. A cast-iron skillet provides better cooking results. Pairs well with sweet potato fries or a side salad.
